New Mexico Trout Fishing
Considering where it is located, the very idea of something like New Mexico trout fishing may at first seem a little bizarre. Even though New Mexico is located in the part of America where there is a lot of desert and sun, there are also waterways that harbor the noble trout. Just because there are waterways filled with trout is no excuse to fish without responsibility. If we take care of the trout then there will always be more trout to catch another day. There are more people on the planet than there are trout after all – especially in New Mexico.
The rules of catching and releasing apply everywhere, even in New Mexico. Trout fishing is an art and following a few simply guidelines will ensure that it can remain an art for a long time to come. Handling the fish too roughly and forgetting that it is, after all, just a fish can easily kill the poor animal. If care is not taken when handling the catch then it might as well be cooked, anyway. There are a few simple rules and tips that anyone can remember to improve a fish’s chances for survival. These tips do not count only for trout, but generally for all fish.
A fish does have bones, it is true, but these bones are small and brittle since the water does most of the supporting work for a fish. Handling a fish to hard or squeezing it with too much pressure can not only break these brittle bones but will probably damage its organs as well. Take care when handling a catch caught on a New Mexico trout-fishing trip. Do not squeeze to hard when handling the fish and you can ensure that it will live to fight another day.
A human being has skin to protect him from the dangers of the world. A trout has a covering of slime that protects it from parasites and diseases. When you handle the trout try not to remove any of the protective slime surrounding it. Even with the heat, parasites and bugs thrive in New Mexico. Trout fishing areas can be seriously damaged if all the trout are infested with parasites and disease that cause them to die. Something as innocent as dragging the fish over the grass or rocks can remove the slime so take extra care when removing the fish from the water.
An angler breathes oxygen in the air and trout breathes oxygen in the water. Remember that when you are New Mexico trout fishing! A fish cannot survive for too long outside of the water since it starts to suffocate almost immediately upon leaving the water. A person can hold its breath but a trout does not think of holding its breath when removed from the water. Keep it in the water when at all possible and its chances of survival are greatly increased.
Just remembering these few simple tips will increase the life expectancy of all trout caught in New Mexico. Trout fishing as a sport will benefit from it.
