Smallmouth Bass Fishing

When going out to catch a particular fish, it is always good to know a little more about the fish you are about to tackle. Let us look at someone who wants to go smallmouth bass fishing at a nearby area where these fish can be found. While it is all well and good that a specific fish is in mind, it is useful to know as much as one can about the target before heading out to seek it. Sun Tzu did say that one must know the enemy better than one knows oneself. Therefore, let us take a closer look at the smallmouth bass.

The smallmouth bass is a freshwater fish of the sunfish family. It can be classified as one of the black basses and is much sought after by anglers. It is also known as a bronzeback, a brown bass, a brownie, or a bronze bass but is most commonly referred to as a smallmouth bass. Fishing for this species of bass was often done in the cool water rivers and lakes of America and Canada. Nowadays these fish have spread to various rivers and lakes all across the country and can be found in most places. It is, however, a native of the upper and middle Mississippi, the Great Lakes basin and the Hudson Bay basin.

To be successful at smallmouth bass fishing, it is important to know where the fish makes its home and where it prefers to live. The smallmouth bass, unlike its largemouth cousin, prefers clear water. It is most often found in clear streams and rivers but can also be found in the sandy bottom of dams and lakes and often makes its home around rocky outcroppings or other obstacles. It prefers a much colder water temperature than the largemouth bass but is able to adapt to its environment if necessary. It is, however, very susceptible to disturbances of the ecosystem such as pollution and is often used as an indicator for the general health of the river or lake system.

There are various methods available to successfully catch a smallmouth bass. Fishing or angling experts will be able to share all the various methods that exist to land a smallmouth. Both natural and artificial lures and baits can be used including crankbaits, spinnerbaits and the wide variety of plastic lures that are available. They can also be caught using a fly rod and using a wet fly, nymphs or streamers. Larger imitations of their aquatic prey such as crawfish or leeches can also be used successfully as a lure.

While there is more to tell about the smallmouth bass, the above should serve as a good introduction to the beginner. Always remember when you are smallmouth bass fishing that there are but a finite number of these glorious animals in the world. Catch only when you have to. It is considered good sportsmanship to practice a catch-and-release policy. Thereby allowing future generations of anglers the opportunity to battle these noble fish.
